Volunteering
Working hard and loving it . . .
Campanario offers a volunteer program for a minimum of 1 month throughout the year at the Biological Station.
Volunteers must be qualified university students or graduates desiring to live in Costa Rica, to improve their conversational skills in Spanish, and to work in somewhat uncomfortable conditions in the remote biological station. We make every effort to give the volunteers a wide variety of experiences and training during their time with us.
We are looking for people with biology, ecology, or similar backgrounds who are willing to live and work in the tropical lowland heat and humidity and alongside the maintenance personnel and biologists at Campanario. Volunteers gain experience in construction, maintenance, environmental education, hospitality, and conservation issues. They get to know the rainforest well. Many experiences depend upon the activities at the time at Campanario. Once a volunteer is confident with the details of the Campanario property, it is hoped that they can move into a guiding and teaching role when there are student groups visiting. If a long-term study is being carried out, volunteers may be called to assist the researchers.
Volunteers must not mind getting dirty, must know how to swim, and must not need the amenities of civilization (like TV, WiFi, ice cream, ice cubes, and soda pop). Housing is provided in a shared bunkhouse, and communal cooking duty is in a shared kitchen when there are no guests. More information about payments and fees will be sent to you once you request an application.
Please contact us by email with your availability and curriculum vitae. A full letter of intent with references isn't necessary, just a brief paragraph or two describing what you would like to gain from your experience in Costa Rica and with Campanario. We will then send you a letter describing the volunteer experience, the last few pages of which contain an application.
